During the United Nations General Assembly, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Poland, South Korea, and the United Kingdom jointly issued a statement in support of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Joseph Wu, expressed high appreciation and gratitude for this unified stance.
On September 22, foreign ministers and high-level representatives from Australia, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Poland, South Korea, the UK, and other European and Indo-Pacific regional partner countries issued a joint statement after their second meeting during the UN General Assembly. The statement emphasized these countries’ recognition of the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and encouraged dialogue while opposing any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.
The joint statement by the eight countries, including Australia, France, Germany, and Japan, also highlighted the increasing interconnectedness of security, peace, and prosperity between Europe and the Indo-Pacific region. These nations pledged to enhance cooperation to collectively address challenges such as multifaceted threats, ensuring their resilience.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the international community and like-minded partners’ continued attention to and emphasis on the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. In the face of escalating geopolitical and regional challenges, Taiwan will continue to strengthen its self-defense capabilities and societal resilience. Building on existing strong foundations, Taiwan will deepen cooperation with all like-minded democratic partners to safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, promoting regional security and prosperity.
Furthermore, President of Taiwan, Lai Ching-te, expressed gratitude today to allied nations Paraguay, Palau, and eSwatini for voicing support for Taiwan during the United Nations General Assembly. He stated that the expansion of authoritarianism is a global threat, while unity among democratic countries is the only answer to safeguarding peace and prosperity. In the face of increasing challenges posed by authoritarian expansion, Taiwan will not retreat and will not stand alone, continuing to stand together with democratic partners.
