On August 10, 2026, Jaguar Land Rover in China announced a discount of 171,900 yuan on the Land Rover Defender 110 HSE, with the potential for additional discounts totaling around 200,000 yuan. The original price of the Land Rover Defender 110 HSE was 899,000 yuan, but after the discount, the starting price is 728,000 yuan, representing a reduction of 171,900 yuan. Dealers mentioned to “21st Century Economic Report” on August 11 that with regional subsidies and trade-in offers, customers could save up to 200,000 yuan on their purchase. It was disclosed that this promotion is time-limited.
This price cut by Jaguar Land Rover in China is mainly a response to declining sales performance. According to the financial report for 2026, Jaguar Land Rover’s global retail sales decreased by 17.8% year-on-year, with a 25.4% drop in retail sales in the Chinese market. In the first quarter of the 2027 financial year, retail sales in China saw a decline of 23.9%.
It’s not only Land Rover experiencing a sales decline in China; Chevrolet, which used to be popular in China, has also seen a significant decrease in sales. According to the mainland car information platform, Car King, Chevrolet sold only 36 vehicles in China from January to June 2026, with sales plummeting to just 1 vehicle in June, ranking at the bottom among all car brands.
With declining sales, dealerships have also been greatly affected. The official Chevrolet China website indicates that the brand no longer has independent dealers in various provinces and cities such as Beijing, Chongqing, Hubei, Zhejiang, and Hainan. In 2014, Chevrolet achieved a historical high annual sales volume of approximately 767,000 vehicles in the Chinese market, with nearly a thousand dealerships across the country.
The struggles faced by Land Rover and Chevrolet are just a microcosm of the Chinese automotive market. Not only these two brands but the entire Chinese auto market has experienced a downturn in the first half of the year. Data from the China Passenger Car Association shows that retail sales of passenger cars in China dropped by 20.2% in the first half of the year. Moreover, the association predicted in mid-June that the overall retail sales growth for 2026 would fall to -14%, marking the most pessimistic forecast in years and indicating a highly pessimistic market performance.
