US Lawmaker Attends Taiwan Culture Week, Supports Taiwan’s Participation in WHA

The World Health Assembly (WHA) is about to convene, with US officials openly voicing support for Taiwan’s participation. Democratic federal Congressman Ro Khanna from the Silicon Valley district attended Taiwan’s Traditional Week event on the 12th, presenting a certificate of congratulations and signing a petition banner to endorse Taiwan’s involvement in WHA.

To celebrate Taiwan’s Traditional Week, the Taiwanese community in the San Francisco Bay Area gathered at the Bay Area Cultural and Educational Center on Mother’s Day to hold a series of activities. Congressman Ro Khanna from California’s 17th district made an appearance, spending over 30 minutes touring the various themed exhibits and expressing gratitude to Taiwanese expatriates for their contributions to quality traditions and culinary culture.

Khanna led a delegation to Taiwan last year and attended a banquet where President Tsai Ing-wen transited through Los Angeles. In his speech, he mentioned the fruitful outcomes of his visit to Taiwan, sampled delicious pineapple cakes, and highlighted the diverse and rich culinary scene in his Silicon Valley district. He also extended best wishes for the success of Taiwan’s Traditional Week culinary competition.

The World Health Assembly is scheduled to convene on May 27 in Geneva, Switzerland, and Taiwan has not yet received an invitation. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently strongly urged the World Health Organization (WHO) to allow Taiwan to return to the assembly as an observer. Daniel J. Kritenbrink, the US State Department’s Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, also anticipates an increase in international support for Taiwan this year.

Taking advantage of the opportunity to participate in Taiwan’s Traditional Week, Khanna signed the petition banner, joining a number of local California officials in supporting Taiwan’s return to the World Health Assembly.
