Taiwanese diaspora in New York City calls for Taiwan to join the United Nations

During the opening session of the United Nations General Assembly, at noon on September 27th, approximately 60 representatives from various Taiwanese associations in the greater New York area boarded a ship together to hold a maritime promotional event on the East River near the United Nations headquarters, advocating for Taiwan’s inclusion in the United Nations.

The Taiwanese expatriates participating in the event were on a cruise ship adorned with prominent yellow and black banners reading “Keep Taiwan Free” and “U.N. Membership For Taiwan Now!” The vessel set sail from a harbor on the east coast of Manhattan, cruising along the East River, first enjoying the beautiful views of the famous landmarks of New York City, then passing by the iconic Statue of Liberty symbolizing freedom and democracy, before circling back to the United Nations headquarters, hoping that the international community would take notice of Taiwan’s plea.

The event was strategically scheduled to coincide with the speech by the Chinese Foreign Minister at the United Nations, aiming to convey the voices of the Taiwanese people through the maritime promotional activity, emphasizing Taiwan’s rightful place within the United Nations system and its entitlement to full international participation rights. This activity was part of a series of promotional activities on land, sea, and air during the United Nations General Assembly to raise awareness and garner support from the international community for the situation in Taiwan.
