Taiwan breaks spy case: Ministry of National Defense says it has controlled and reduced damage impact.

Taiwan High Prosecutors Office in Tainan concluded the prosecution of a large-scale espionage organization operating in Taiwan and undertaking activities to obtain military secrets. The Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of China pointed out that this case was reported by military personnel, and measures have been taken to properly control and minimize the impact of possible leaks of classified information.

On the 18th, the Tainan branch of the Taiwan High Prosecutors Office announced the bust of an espionage organization developing in Taiwan and engaging in activities to obtain military secrets. They have prosecuted 23 individuals, including 8 active-duty military personnel from various branches such as the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard, with the highest-ranking officer being a captain. All military personnel involved in the leak of secrets are now under debt.

The Tainan branch of the Prosecutors Office stated that they recently received information from the Military Security Command of the Ministry of National Defense, which was confirmed by the National Security Maintenance Task Force of the Investigative Bureau of the Ministry of Justice, requesting to investigate individuals named Hsu and Sun for offenses related to national security laws and foreign threats.

According to the Prosecutors Office in Tainan, under the command of Prosecutor Tsai Li-yi, investigators from the National Security Maintenance Task Force carried out four waves of searches at a total of 29 locations, seizing items such as mobile phones used in the criminal activities, computer hard drives, USB drives, 9 pieces of military intelligence, and 1 piece of classified government information. They also summoned 49 military and civilian personnel, including the Hsu brothers, for questioning. The prosecutors arrested the Hsu brothers and Sun on the spot and successfully applied for their detention and visitation restrictions.

The Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of China issued a press release stating that the Political Warfare Bureau received voluntary reports from military personnel in 2022. The Hsu brothers were suspected of luring military personnel to obtain classified military information. The case was then reported to the Prosecutors Office in Tainan for investigation, resulting in the effective dismantling of the espionage organization.

The Ministry of National Defense emphasized that comprehensive measures have been taken to carefully control and minimize the damage caused by any potential leaks of classified information. In response to the infiltration tactics of the Chinese Communist Party, efforts will be ongoing to educate military personnel, enhance security awareness, implement strict internal control mechanisms, promote prudent financial management practices, and collectively safeguard national defense security.
