On September 16, Typhoon “Beibija” swept through Yangcheng Lake in Jiangsu Province, bringing unprecedented challenges to the local hairy crab farming industry. Some breeders exclaimed that “how can the breeders in Yangcheng Lake survive this?”

Netizen “Suzhou Uncle Shen” posted a video on September 16, saying, “The typhoon has arrived, and here in our central location, we are facing a typhoon of level twelve or thirteen.” He added in the caption that agriculture depends on the weather, hoping for minimal losses.

After the typhoon passed, netizen “@Yangchenghu Lao Lu” posted a video expressing the heavy losses incurred after months of hard work. Netizen “Yangchenghu Tong Shuai Da Zha Xie” captioned in the video, “How can the breeders in Yangcheng Lake survive this?”

On that day, Mr. Su, a hairy crab breeder, expressed on a live broadcast that the typhoon’s impact on Yangcheng Lake had been significant, with almost every breeder having their enclosures blown down.

“Yangcheng Lake relies on enclosed breeding for crabs, and when the enclosures are blown down, the crabs escape.” Mr. Su stated that he bred around 5,000 kilograms of hairy crabs on 20 mu of land and had been in the hairy crab breeding business for many years but had never encountered such a severe natural disaster.

According to reports, Yangcheng Lake is a well-known hairy crab producing area in China, with enclosed breeding covering an area of 16,000 mu. The current extent of losses is unknown.

According to the meteorological department forecast, at 12:00 noon on the 16th, Typhoon “Beibija” made landfall in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province, with a maximum wind force near the center reaching level 13, at 38 meters per second. Around 00:40 on the 17th, “Beibija” had moved from Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, to Chuzhou, Anhui Province. Due to the impact of the typhoon and its residual circulation, heavy to torrential rains are expected in Shandong, Jiangsu, Henan, Anhui, and other regions in the next three days.
