On Monday, September 16th, Typhoon Bebinca made landfall in Pudong, Shanghai, bringing strong winds and heavy rain, resulting in flight cancellations, highway closures, and chaotic streets. This is the strongest storm to hit this Chinese financial center in 75 years.
According to mainland media reports, the center of Typhoon Bebinca, a severe typhoon, landed along the coast of Lingang New City in Pudong, Shanghai, around 7:30 a.m. on Monday. At the time of landfall, the maximum wind speed near the center reached level 14 (42 meters/second), making it the most powerful typhoon to strike Shanghai since Typhoon Gloria in 1949.
As a result of the typhoon, as of midnight on Monday, more than 414,000 people in Shanghai had been evacuated. Tourist attractions such as Shanghai Disneyland, Jinjiang Amusement Park, and Shanghai Wild Animal Park have temporarily closed. In the nearby city of Zhoushan, restaurants, supermarkets, and shops were also closed on Monday, and public transportation services were suspended. Additionally, some high-speed rail services were halted, and flights were canceled.
After making landfall, Typhoon Bebinca continued to move in a west-northwest direction. Due to its impact, parts of Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, and other regions experienced strong winds and heavy rain on Monday. Some areas even saw heavy downpours. The northwestern part of the East China Sea, Shanghai and its coastal areas, the southeastern part of Jiangsu and its coastal areas, the northeastern part of Zhejiang and its coastal areas, Hangzhou Bay, the Yangtze River Estuary, and the waters near the Zhoushan Islands are expected to experience winds of levels 9 to 11, with gusts reaching levels 12 to 13.
