Another Traffic Accident at School Gate, Large Number of Students Injured in Wuhan Primary School

On the morning of September 10th, a serious car accident occurred near a primary school in Wuhan, Hubei Province, causing a large number of primary school students and parents to be injured, drawing attention from netizens.

According to a video posted by netizens on September 10th, a serious car accident happened near the Second Elementary School of Canglong in the East Lake New Technology Development Zone of Wuhan. A man driving a white Cadillac crashed into students of the Canglong Second Elementary School who were on their way to school, resulting in many students and parents being injured.

The video shows a chaotic scene on site, with many people lying on the ground and electric bicycles scattered around. A man in a red shirt, believed to be the driver responsible for the accident, was restrained.

Witnesses said the driver tried to escape after hitting people, pushing an electric bike while attempting to flee in his car. He was eventually stopped by bystanders and later brought under control by the police.

As reported by Xiaoxiang Morning News, the injured were taken to the East Campus of Hubei Provincial People’s Hospital for treatment. Medical staff in the emergency department of the East Campus confirmed that many accident victims, including both adults and children, were brought in for treatment, some requiring observation, some transferred to the inpatient department, and others kept under observation at the scene. However, the staff stated that they were only responsible for treatment and not aware of where the injured individuals were coming from.

This incident has once again brought attention to the traffic safety issues around school campuses. Witnesses pointed out that the accident occurred during the peak hours of parents dropping off their children, with the school gate entrance being narrow and crowded, posing significant safety risks. Some netizens questioned the recurring incidents at school entrances and urged for immediate actions to address the safety concerns.

Following the circulation of the incident online, the Jiangxia District Public Security Bureau issued a statement to dispel rumors, stating that at 7:58 AM on the 10th, a sedan collided with two electric bicycles on the road, resulting in injuries to the victims who were promptly taken to the hospital. The driver of the sedan, a 56-year-old man named He, was brought under control.

The official statement revealed that after medical examinations, only one person suffered a fracture, while three others sustained minor abrasions. The investigation ruled out the driver’s involvement in drunk driving or driving under the influence of drugs.

Reports from mainland media Netease also indicated that the accident was not as severe as speculated, with only one person sustaining a fracture and three others minor injuries. Therefore, the driver may be at most charged with the crime of reckless driving.

The official response faced criticism from netizens who questioned the discrepancy between the official report and the actual number of injured individuals witnessed at the scene. Commenters recalled seeing around eleven people – adults and children – injured lying on the ground along with a pile of electric bikes.

Netizen comments varied, with some expressing concern over how mistakes are acknowledged and accidents prevented, emphasizing the need to take responsibility and prevent future incidents. Others raised suspicions of intentional actions and called for strict penalties for traffic offenders.

In the aftermath of the incident, reflections on safety measures and accountability have surfaced, prompting a broader conversation on ensuring the safety of students and pedestrians near school premises.
