Taiwanese Foreign Ministry Showcases Taiwan’s Soft Power at Asia-Pacific Sustainable Expo

The 2024 Asia-Pacific Sustainable Expo took place from the 8th to the 10th in Taipei, Taiwan. For the first time this year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China set up an exhibition booth at the Asia-Pacific Sustainable Expo. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tanaka Mitsuru, expressed the hope that through participating in the exhibition, the world can see the positive impact of Taiwan and showcase Taiwan’s active contributions in various fields.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China issued a press release stating that the Taiwan Sustainable Energy Research Foundation held the “2024 Asia-Pacific Sustainable Expo” at the Taipei World Trade Center. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tanaka Mitsuru, attended on the 8th and served as the presenter of the Taiwan Sustainable Action Award. This year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs set up an exhibition booth with the theme of “Sustainable Meeting in Diplomacy,” showcasing the ministry’s efforts to promote Taiwan’s alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and international initiatives. Currently, Julio Orozco, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, and several ambassadors stationed in Taiwan visited the exhibition booth of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During his speech, Tanaka Mitsuru explained that the ministry’s first participation in the expo aims to let the international community and the public understand the ministry’s efforts in collaboration with domestic NGOs and the private sector to promote the SDGs. Examples include Taiwan’s efforts to join the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), aid to Ukraine and Turkey for disasters, hosting international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) in Taiwan, women’s diplomacy, and international youth ambassador exchange programs. These initiatives highlight Taiwan’s active contributions in areas such as healthcare, humanitarian aid, gender equality, and environmental sustainability, showcasing Taiwan’s values and positive impact to the world.

Fifty college students selected as international youth ambassadors by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also visited the expo. Tanaka Mitsuru encouraged these youth ambassadors, who will soon visit Belize and Guatemala in late August, to be good spokespeople for Taiwan, engage in public diplomacy, and share Taiwan’s fruitful achievements in sustainable development with the international community.

The exhibition booth of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China is located in the expo’s “Policy Zone B01,” featuring sustainable development goals such as “Zero Hunger,” “Good Health and Well-Being,” “Quality Education,” “Gender Equality,” “Climate Action,” and “Global Partnership.” On the 9th and 10th afternoons from 2 to 3 p.m., the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will feature themes like “Catalyzing Change: Collaborating with NGOs for Scalable Sustainable Actions” and “Pioneering New Paths: Guiding Companies to Engage in Partnerships,” inviting representatives from NGOs and businesses to speak at the ministry’s booth. Visitors are welcome to visit during the expo period.
