A rare upside-down rainbow appears in Guangdong, resembling “the smile of the sky.”

Recently, a netizen in Guangdong captured a colorful arc-shaped “seven-colored auspicious cloud” hanging in the sky, resembling a “smile in the sky”, which looked very beautiful.

On July 10th, the discussion about the “rare inverted rainbow appeared in Guangdong” trended.

According to reports from mainland media, on the evening of the 8th, a netizen in Zijin, Heyuan, Guangdong, photographed a colorful “inverted rainbow”.

This circular arc-shaped “seven-colored auspicious cloud” appears even more vibrant than the colors of a regular rainbow, hanging upside down in the sky, thus being called the “inverted rainbow”. It looks like a smiling face or what some call a “smiling rainbow” or “smile in the sky”.

Local netizens were lucky enough to capture this rare sight in the right place and at the right time.

In fact, in recent years, several cities in the UK, the US, Canada, Japan, and China have witnessed the occurrence of such “inverted rainbows”.

An “inverted rainbow” forms in the sky on the same side as the sun, enclosing the zenith in a length not exceeding a quarter of a full circle. This phenomenon typically lasts only a few minutes, is more common in polar regions, and very rare in temperate regions.

On March 9, 2022, an “inverted rainbow” appeared over the skies of Beijing; on October 13, 2020, an inverted rainbow also appeared over Beijing city; on July 3, 2013, Taiyuan, Shanxi, witnessed an “inverted rainbow”; on June 2, 2014, it appeared in Chaihe, Zhalantun City, Inner Mongolia; in the same year, it appeared in Chongqing and Zhuhai in August.
