Hong Kong artist Lin Xue (formerly known as Lin Jie) and Mak Pei Dong recently did the Cantonese dubbing for the animated movie “The Garfield Movie: Farm Adventure”. They collaborated as a father-son duo in the film, with the touching portrayal of the father-son relationship deeply affecting Lin Xue. This made him realize the importance of making amends for the father-son relationship he had long neglected. Communication and weight loss were seen as ways to mend family relationships, inspired by a piece of advice from director Johnnie To.
Lin Xue, aged 59, is a well-known supporting actor in Hong Kong, who has gained multiple awards for his unique appearance, accent, and acting skills. His prominent belly has become his trademark, with concerns from netizens about his physical health occasionally arising.
In the movie “God of Cookery”, Lin Xue played the role of “Fat Snow”, leaving a lasting impression on the audience. Despite previously being a hot topic due to his weight, he once joked about his weight loss efforts, mentioning the struggles of resisting tempting Chinese delicacies. It was a humorous take on his journey to shed pounds.
In March this year, Lin Xue announced his weight loss journey on social media. At the time, he weighed a staggering 136 kilograms (around 300 pounds) and showed signs of peculiar black spots on his face, causing worries among those around him. However, it was a stern word from Johnnie To that truly motivated Lin Xue to commit to losing weight.
One day, Johnnie To warned Lin Xue, “Pay attention, if you suddenly die, it’s fine, but what’s worse is if you become a burden to others!” Reflecting on this moment, Lin Xue said, “I didn’t understand his words back then, but now I do.” He explained that Johnnie To’s message was about the responsibility family members may face if one’s health deteriorates due to negligence.
Lin Xue finally comprehended that to love others, one must first love oneself. He expressed, “Without good health, everything else is just noise. If you can’t take care of yourself, how can you help others? How can you love your family and children? I now understand that only by being healthy can I bring happiness to my family and relieve them from worries, as a way of repaying their care.”
Deciding to embark on his weight loss journey in March, Lin Xue set a goal to lose 30 pounds in three months. While he revealed that he has already shed 10 kilograms (around 22 pounds), he acknowledged it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Feeling lighter and more at ease with himself, he mentioned confidently that he will continue his efforts upon seeing positive results.
