Recently, a Mexican citizen is facing federal charges after U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers discovered over 16 pounds of fentanyl valued at $238,032 in his electric motorcycle.
According to CBP officials, the 22-year-old Mexican man arrived at the southern border San Ysidro port on August 3 driving a 2024 Revoo electric lightweight motorcycle and applied to enter the U.S., but was asked for a secondary inspection.
CBP officers used non-intrusive imaging technology and detected abnormalities underneath the rear end of his motorcycle.
Upon receiving an alert from a detection canine, CBP officers found seven packages containing 16.53 pounds of white fentanyl powder, which is estimated to be worth $238,032 on the street.
CBP officers also seized the lightweight motorcycle, a GPS tracker, and a mobile phone. The man has been arrested and will face federal charges for drug smuggling.
In a previous incident on a day in May, CBP officers intercepted two different vehicles at two different locations and confiscated drugs worth over $300,000.
On May 17, also at the San Ysidro port of entry, CBP officers identified an abnormality in the firewall of a 2013 Honda Civic during scanning and upon secondary inspection, found 6 packages of white fentanyl powder valued at $113,600 and 8.4 pounds of cocaine worth approximately $161,600.
That same day, at the Calexico East Port of Entry about 100 miles away, CBP officers scanned a 2011 Nissan Cube and discovered anomalies in the vehicle’s floor. Subsequent inspection revealed 63 packages of methamphetamine on the floor.
Mariza Marin, the director of the San Ysidro Port Authority, stated in a release, “Smugglers are employing innovative strategies to smuggle deadly drugs into our country. Despite these challenges, our officers remain highly vigilant and effectively utilize their training, canine resources, and non-intrusive technology to thwart these smuggling attempts.”
