In the wake of Aaron Kwok’s luxurious estate in The Peak and Andy Lau’s Villa de Alegria becoming popular tourist attractions for mainland travelers, Chow Yun Fat (“Brother Fat”)’s mansion on Kam Pui Street in Kowloon Tong has also emerged as a hot spot. Reports suggest that Chow Yun Fat and his wife, Jasmine Tan, have always been savvy investors with numerous real estate properties under their name. Since purchasing this mansion in 1990, the couple has been living there permanently.
A mainland netizen recently filmed outside the Kowloon Tong mansion saying, “Chow Yun Fat’s Hong Kong mansion. Brother Fat bought this mansion in 1990 for 14.7 million Hong Kong dollars and it is now worth 300 million Hong Kong dollars, a whopping 20-fold increase.”
The netizen in the video mentioned that Kowloon Tong is a well-known affluent area in Hong Kong. Apart from Chow Yun Fat, fellow actor who starred with him in “God of Gamblers,” Anthony Wong, also resides nearby and hinted at making a video introducing the area.
The report mentions that Kam Pui Street in Kowloon Tong boasts several celebrity homeowners. The late international martial arts superstar Bruce Lee once lived at 41 Kam Pui Street, while renowned feng shui master Joseph Lee once owned the property at 20 Kam Pui Street, which he sold for 110 million Hong Kong dollars in 2017.
Chow Yun Fat has worked hard for decades, flourishing in his career with wise investments, amassing considerable wealth. Starting in the 1990s, he began investing in real estate, owning properties not only in Kowloon Tong but also in The Peak, Sheung Wan, Clear Water Bay, and Mong Kok, as well as acquiring land in Sai Kung and Clear Water Bay. It is rumored that all the properties held by Chow Yun Fat are jointly owned with his wife, Jasmine Tan, totaling their assets to 5.6 billion Hong Kong dollars, inclusive of overseas properties and stocks.
Despite their substantial wealth, both Chow and his wife are known for their frugality. Earlier reports from Hong Kong media indicated that after dining out, the couple would always take home leftovers and their home furnishings are not about chasing fashion trends, with even their television being a model from over a decade ago. Although the couple does not have children, their estate planning is well-established. Jasmine Tan revealed in a program that they have established a charitable foundation, planning to donate their assets for public good after their passing. Chow Yun Fat has also expressed his sentiment that everything he owns is temporary, as nothing can be taken with him, stating, “I don’t want to take anything because the money isn’t mine, it’s just what I earned, I’m just temporarily holding onto it.”
