Chinese American Doctor in Los Angeles County Arrested for Illegal Distribution of Prescription Drugs

On Thursday morning (October 22), FBI agents conducted a large-scale enforcement operation in the Los Angeles area, arresting multiple suspects involved in healthcare fraud, including a Chinese doctor from Walnut, Los Angeles County. The Department of Justice immediately filed lawsuits against 15 individuals, with the total amount involved reaching a staggering $2 billion.

The charges include schemes such as a drug abuse treatment fraud involving over $1.6 billion, Medicare fraud totaling $134 million, and end-of-life care fraud exceeding $138 million.

Colin M. McDonald, Assistant Attorney General of the Department of Justice’s National Fraud Enforcement Team, stated at a press conference that the accused individuals deceived patients by offering free airfare, accommodations, gift vouchers, etc., to obtain their insurance information while failing to provide appropriate treatment, or by providing excessive treatment for profit.

Among the 15 defendants currently facing charges, 10 have been arrested, including 62-year-old Chinese doctor Dejun Wang from Walnut, Southern California, who is accused of illegally selling prescription drug samples.

According to the Department of Justice’s allegations, Dr. Wang is accused of selling prescription drug samples that are not meant for resale to pharmacy operators in the San Gabriel Valley. These operators repackaged the drugs before providing them to customers.

Many of the drugs involved are prescription medications related to treating type 2 diabetes, including Rybelsus, Ozempic, and Mounjaro. Prescription drug samples are typically provided by pharmaceutical companies to healthcare professionals for specific medical purposes and are not meant for resale.

The case is currently in the preliminary prosecution phase, with ongoing investigations by the FBI and the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services.
