Average Net Worth of 50-Year-Olds is $1.5 Million: Survey of Americans’ Wealth Across Different Age Groups

According to the latest “Survey of Consumer Finances” (SCF) data released by the Federal Reserve Board in October, American household net worth continues to rise, with the average net worth of the 50-plus age group surpassing $1.5 million.

In 2025, the average net worth of Americans aged 40 to 49 reached $876,091, up from $742,568 in 2022 (adjusted for inflation). The average net worth of Americans in their 60s reached a remarkable $1.96 million (up from $1.92 million in 2022), while those in their 70s amounted to $1.88 million (up from $1.84 million in 2022).

Senior researcher at the American Enterprise Institute, Andrew Biggs, pointed out in an interview with USA TODAY that “the underlying situation here is that retirees are becoming increasingly wealthy.”

Overall, the average net worth of American households (assets minus liabilities) increased from $1.16 million in 2022 to $1.23 million in 2025.

Since 2019, especially during the peak of the pandemic, the continuous rise in stock and real estate values has driven the rapid accumulation of net worth for older and wealthier Americans.

However, if you’re not yet a millionaire, there’s no need to despair. The above figures are all averages, and a small number of super wealthy individuals significantly inflate the overall data.

When looking at the median figures, the numbers are much lower: the median net worth of American households in 2025 was $216,100, slightly higher than $218,900 in 2022 (a 2.5% increase adjusted for inflation). Comparatively, the median net worth saw a substantial 37% increase from 2019 to 2022, marking the largest increase in the history of the survey.
