A 35-year-old Australian man was sentenced to four months in prison on Friday, September 18, for assaulting a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in March of this year.
According to reports from a local news agency, Thomas Bingham from Melbourne, Australia, admitted last month to a misdemeanor charge of assaulting a federal officer. The Class A misdemeanor carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison.
United States Federal Magistrate Charles Eick delivered the sentence on Friday at the downtown Los Angeles courthouse.
According to documents filed with the federal court, on March 15, an on-duty TSA officer in uniform was leaving a restroom in the connecting area between Terminals 6 and 7 at Los Angeles International Airport.
At that time, Bingham, who was in transit and waiting for a flight from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, approached the officer, accusing him of taking his backpack and passport. According to the plea agreement, Bingham then violently attacked the officer.
Prosecutors stated that Bingham grabbed the officer’s uniform, ripped off his TSA credential lanyard from around his neck, grabbed and pulled the victim’s hair, and shoved him into a glass wall.
The injured officer later reported pain in his hands and back, and underwent a medical examination.
Airport authorities arrested Bingham. The U.S. Department of Justice announced that authorities found Bingham’s carry-on luggage and passport in a restaurant in Terminal 7.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting airport security protocols and the consequences of engaging in violent behavior towards federal officers. Such actions not only jeopardize the safety of individuals but also carry legal repercussions that can lead to incarceration.
