United Airlines announced on Tuesday, August 25, that in 2027 they will be adding 10 new international flights covering destinations in Asia and Europe, expanding their operations to an all-time high. According to CBS, the new international flight destinations for United Airlines include Okinawa, Japan, Toulouse, France, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, Marseille, France, Ibiza, Spain, Valencia, Spain, Terceira, Portugal, Ljubljana, Slovenia, as well as Olbia and Catania in Italy.
United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said that in recent years, the company has been continuously adding routes to international cities, with this year’s expansion being even larger. One of the reasons for this expansion is that aircraft manufacturers are gradually catching up with demand. Currently, United Airlines serves over 160 international destinations.
The new routes are set to begin operation as early as March 27, 2027. For instance, the San Francisco to Okinawa route will offer three flights per week, operated by Boeing 777-200ER aircraft.
Newark Liberty International Airport will serve as a key hub for this flight expansion, offering flights to Luxembourg, Ljubljana, Olbia, Catania, Ibiza, Valencia, Marseille, and Terceira, among other destinations.
Washington Dulles International Airport will also commence daily flights to Toulouse starting on April 26, utilizing the Airbus A321XLR aircraft.
Other new routes will also feature Airbus aircraft, equipped with United Airlines’ premium Polaris cabin and Economy Plus seats.
Kirby noted that the operational performance of Newark Airport has improved in recent years, providing the company the opportunity to increase transatlantic flights. He has previously advocated for reforming airport flight schedules to alleviate flight congestion issues.
In addition to the 10 new destinations, United Airlines will also add flights from Los Angeles to Osaka, Washington D.C. to Milan, Denver to Paris, and resume service from San Francisco to Tel Aviv. The company stated that in the past decade, they have added nearly 60 international destinations.
This expansion reflects the increasing demand from passengers for new overseas destinations. Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of International Network and Alliances, stated that travelers are no longer solely focused on traditional major European cities but are increasingly interested in multi-city itineraries, like flying to one city and returning from another.
Kirby also discussed ticket pricing, indicating that air travel still offers good value for money. Ticket prices, which plummeted during the pandemic due to a sharp decline in demand, are gradually returning to more normal levels.
United Airlines emphasized that all new routes will require government approval before officially commencing.
