Egg shortage? Some Taiwan Costco stores switch from selling 30-pack eggs to 20-pack

In response to the shortage of eggs, Taiwan’s Costco has adjusted the way eggs are sold in some of its stores. They have switched from selling eggs in 30-count packs to 20-count packs for a trial period with the aim of allowing more members to purchase eggs.

Taiwan produces around 24 million eggs daily. Recently, due to a slight decrease in production and tight supply, some retailers have had to alter their sales strategies. Costco Taiwan announced on August 17 that, in response to the current market supply situation for eggs, they will be selling eggs in 20-count packs instead of the original 30-count packs at their Zhonghe and Xizhi stores for the trial period. Costco added that they will continue to work with suppliers to ensure a stable egg supply.

In terms of pricing, a box of 30 eggs was previously sold for NT$329, averaging around NT$10.97 per egg; a box of 20 eggs is priced at NT$225, averaging NT$11.25 per egg, making each egg more expensive by approximately NT$0.28.

For now, if you purchase eggs online through Costco Taiwan, they still come in 30-count packs.

Lin Hsin-hung, Secretary-General of the Taiwan Association of Fine Washing and Selecting Eggs, mentioned to a reporter from the Central News Agency that the recent supply situation of eggs is mainly affected by the hot weather, but it has not reached a point of being an egg shortage. Coupled with the avian flu outbreak six months ago, egg farmers reduced their stock and typically cull older hens during the summer break. There is a chance that things will slowly return to normal starting in September. As the affected areas are mainly in the northern region at the moment, it is hoped that if there are egg sources from the south or central regions, they can assist in supplying the north.

In 2025, the United States experienced an egg shortage due to avian flu, leading to a rush on egg purchases at Costco locations in the U.S., prompting sales restrictions to ensure more members could buy eggs. As of now, there have been no reports of egg hoarding at Costco stores in Taiwan.
