On the evening of July 22, in the Jinshui District of Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, a waterlogged road section experienced an electric leakage incident, leading to a person being suspected of being electrocuted and falling to the ground.
The Zhengzhou Meteorological Observatory issued an orange rainstorm warning at 20:30 on July 22: more than 50 millimeters of precipitation had been recorded in most parts of the main urban area of Zhengzhou, with some areas receiving over 100 millimeters of rainfall.
Several netizens from Zhengzhou posted videos indicating that the heavy rain that evening resulted in severe water accumulation on the roads. Near the intersection of Huanghe Road and Jingba Road in the Jinshui District of Zhengzhou, a man who waded through the water appeared to have been electrocuted and collapsed. Bystanders promptly rescued him and called emergency services. The man was still breathing when pulled out of the water, and people performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation while waiting for further medical help.
A shop owner stated to Jiemu News that on the night of the incident, the road was covered with about 20 centimeters of water, and an electrical leakage occurred beneath the traffic lights at the intersection of Huanghe Road and Jingba Road. A man was electrocuted, and although rescuers arrived and tried to save him for over an hour, they were ultimately unsuccessful.
Regarding the cause of the man’s death, local authorities mentioned that an investigation is ongoing, and it is uncertain whether it is related to the electric leakage.
This official statement has sparked doubts among netizens. Some expressed skepticism, questioning why certainty is lacking in this case, highlighting instances where authorities swiftly determine ownership in other situations. Others criticized the lack of accountability and safety measures in place, suggesting improvements to infrastructure and maintenance practices.
Additionally, some netizens recounted personal experiences with electric leaks in other areas of Zhengzhou, emphasizing the need for public awareness and caution in light of potential hazards. Calls for enhancements to the city’s drainage system and electrical circuitry were also voiced, underscoring the importance of prioritizing safety measures to prevent similar tragedy from occurring in the future.
