Zelensky: Ukraine Needs at Least 7 Sets of Air Defense Systems

Ukrainian President Zelensky informed NATO on Friday (April 19th) that Ukraine needs at least 7 sets of Patriot or other high-end anti-aircraft systems to withstand Russian air strikes. He urged countries to increase military assistance to Kyiv promptly.

In a video conference with the NATO-Ukraine Council, Zelensky delivered an impassioned speech, expressing that current foreign aid levels are “very limited.”

Zelensky stated that Kyiv forces urgently require long-range missiles and ammunition.

“This year, we cannot wait for decisions to be made any longer,” he said.

While his speech at the meeting was held behind closed doors, his office published the full text and video on their website.

“Russian President Putin must step down, and our skies must become safe again. This entirely depends on your choices,” Zelensky said.

In recent weeks, Russia has stepped up remote bombing of Ukraine’s power grid and infrastructure, heightening pressure on Kyiv. Meanwhile, Russian forces, with numerical and equipment advantages, are slowly advancing on the eastern front.

Zelensky pointed out that just this year, as Western military aid slowed down, Ukraine has endured nearly 1,200 Russian missiles, over 1,500 drones, and 8,500 guided bombs attacks.

“Frankly speaking, for defense, we need 7 sets of ‘Patriot’ or similar anti-aircraft systems, as a minimum requirement. They can save many lives and truly change the situation,” he said.

Following meetings between NATO defense ministers and Zelensky, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg announced that the allies have agreed to provide additional anti-aircraft systems to Kyiv.

Stoltenberg told reporters in Brussels, “Aside from ‘Patriot,’ allies can offer other weapons, including the SAMP/T land-based long-range anti-aircraft missile system. While many countries may not have available equipment, they have pledged financial support to help Ukraine acquire these weapons.”
