Zelensky Attends Summit, Signs Long-Term Security Agreement with EU

The European Union summit was held on Thursday in Brussels, where Ukrainian President Zelensky participated and signed a long-term security commitment agreement with the EU. Western allied countries pledged to continue providing military and political support to Kyiv.

Zelensky took to the social media platform X on Thursday to state, “In Brussels, we signed the ‘Joint Security Commitments’ between Ukraine and the EU with European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.”

Zelensky also expressed gratitude for the 1.9 billion euros emergency aid fund provided by the European Commission to Ukraine on that day.

Moreover, Ukraine also signed bilateral security cooperation agreements with Lithuania and Estonia on the same day.

The signing of these documents formally outlines the EU’s support for Ukraine with a range of measures. The agreement includes EU commitments to assist Ukraine in nine aspects of security and defense policy, such as providing weapons, military training, demining, and defense industry cooperation.

Bloomberg quoted Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo on Thursday in Brussels as saying, “This once again shows the unity of EU countries in supporting Ukraine against Russia’s brutal attacks. We will provide support in every way possible.”

As Kyiv seeks to repel the Russian invasion in its third year, several countries, including EU member states, have reached similar bilateral agreements.

Earlier this month, U.S. President Biden signed a bilateral security agreement with Ukraine, marking a significant milestone in long-term support for Ukraine against Russian aggression. Biden pledged that Western allies would not “back down” in supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression.

While Zelensky visited Brussels, leaders of the 27 EU countries were holding a summit to discuss aid for Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and the EU’s defense strategy. It is expected that the attending leaders will make key appointments of top EU positions post-European elections.
