In Kunming, Yunnan province on the morning of July 7th, a basket of giant wild mushrooms attracted a crowd at the Mushuahua wild mushroom market. Some residents mentioned that they had never seen such large mushrooms before, with some referring to it as the “Mushroom King” and others marveling, “This is the ancestor of all mushrooms.”
According to reports from mainland media, this giant wild mushroom resembles a cluster of large mushrooms with a bottom that gathers into clusters and branches out into many caps, each about the size of a palm, presenting a magnificent appearance. The discoverer, Mr. Cui, stated that the mushrooms were found near Songming, and he had discovered this type of mushroom last year as well, but was surprised to find another one this year. Due to the mushroom’s massive size, he had to enlist the help of four strong friends to bring it back. Upon weighing, this cluster of giant wild mushrooms weighed a whopping 80 kilograms.
Reports mentioned that Mr. Cui intended to showcase and sell the mushroom at the market to allow more people to witness this giant specimen. Staff at the Yunnan Mushuahua wild mushroom trading center introduced the giant mushroom as commonly referred to as “a nest of sheep” by the locals, also known as “a nest of mushrooms”. Because these mushrooms grow in clusters, they tend to have larger sizes, and the 80-kilogram specimen is quite common in the area. Furthermore, this type of mushroom is non-toxic and safe for consumption. Mr. Cui also revealed that a similar giant mushroom was found last year and had a taste similar to cultivated mushrooms after cooking, with no distinctive characteristics.
In the end, the 80-kilogram “nest of mushrooms” was sold for a price of 1,600 yuan.
This news has sparked discussion online. Some netizens marveled, “This is truly a giant among mushrooms, the first time seeing one so large. Yunnan is indeed a paradise for mushrooms.”
Others joked, “If a family were to eat this, how long would it take?”
Some netizens were concerned about the price, saying, “1,600 yuan feels cheap for such a large mushroom, what a great deal.”
One internet user expressed, “I’ve been picking mushrooms all my life and never seen one this big.”
Another internet user commented, “There are many mushrooms in the green belt of Yunnan, and many are large, but seeing such a large cluster of mushrooms for the first time.”
While amazed by the giant mushrooms, many also expressed envy for Yunnan’s abundant mushroom resources. One netizen remarked, “The climate in the western region is suitable, making it ideal for the growth of mushrooms.”
According to the People’s Daily, “a nest of mushrooms” is known for its high yield, short growth cycle, and good taste. In the mushroom breeding base in Greening Township, Qiuxi City, Guizhou Province, “a nest of mushrooms” can be harvested in about 40 days and can be harvested 6-8 times a year.
