Amid continued rainfall, flooding and landslides have occurred in multiple locations in Gongshan County, Yunnan Province, along the China-Myanmar border, affecting approximately 5,885 people.
According to meteorological monitoring, from 8:00 pm on May 30 to 8:00 pm on May 31, Gongshan County experienced heavy rain at 2 stations and rainstorm at 12 stations, with the maximum rainfall reaching 161.4 millimeters. Additionally, hydrological monitoring shows that the water level at the Bailing Station in Longyuan Village, Dulong River Township, reached 1,656.2 meters, surpassing the guaranteed water level by 0.43 meters, setting the record for the highest level since the station was established.
On the afternoon of June 1, a local resident told Extreme Vision News that due to rising water levels in the river, houses collapsed along the riverbanks. Tourists who visited Gongshan County mentioned that continuous heavy rain triggered mudslides and collapses in multiple areas, with houses being washed away, fallen trees, and large rocks rolling onto the roads.
A viral video online shows a 4-story house next to the river collapsing into the water as swift currents eroded its foundation, creating a heart-wrenching scene. Bridge piers were washed away by the floodwaters, vehicles swept away, and many houses inundated by the floodwaters.
Gongshan County, located along the China-Myanmar border, includes towns like Bingzhongluo and Dulong River Township among its administrative areas.
Furthermore, according to a video posted by a netizen, a sudden mudslide occurred on a road near Fugong County in Nujiang City, Yunnan. A large amount of mud and rocks cascaded down instantly, endangering people in its path. In the video, someone can be heard urgently shouting, “Mudslide is coming, run!” The individual is seen being knocked down by the mud and water, with the phone shaking intensely, before managing to climb onto a stone pillar at the roadside to escape.
As reported by the official Chinese media, Xinhua News Agency, on the evening of June 1st, heavy rainfall caused landslides, mudslides, and flash floods along several roads including National Highway 214 from Shangri-La to Deqin, National Highway 215 from Nixi to Tacheng, and Provincial Highway 237 from Deqin to Weixi in Diqing Prefecture, Yunnan Province, resulting in multiple road closures. Some communication networks in parts of Dulong River Township in Nujiang Prefecture were temporarily disrupted. Additionally, flash floods occurred in multiple areas within the Meili Snow Mountain scenic area.
As of 8:00 pm on June 1st, the disasters have affected 1,652 households and 5,885 people, with 27 houses damaged, 16 bridges damaged or washed away, 97 road sections blocked, and some agricultural crops, chicken farms, pigsties, and fish ponds damaged, leading to an estimated economic loss of approximately 87.54 million yuan. The Dulong River Scenic Area and the Gongdang Sacred Mountain Viewing Platform have been temporarily closed. Over 630 tourists were stranded, with more than 500 tourists stranded in Bingzhongluo Town of Gongshan County gradually returning home.
The meteorological department forecasts that heavy rainfall will persist in the next three days. Gongshan County is expected to experience heavy to torrential rain on June 1-2 and moderate to heavy rain on June 3.
