Yunnan Former Vice Governor Li Shisong Charged with Particularly Large Bribery Amount

Former Vice Governor of Yunnan Province, Li Shisong, who fell from grace 11 months ago, has been indicted for accepting bribes of a particularly large amount.

On May 27th, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate of the Communist Party of China announced that the investigation into the case of Li Shisong, former member of the Yunnan Provincial Committee and former Vice Governor of the province, for alleged bribery has been concluded. It was designated to be reviewed and prosecuted by the Guiyang City Procuratorate in Guizhou Province. Recently, the prosecution has been filed with the Guiyang Intermediate People’s Court.

The prosecution stated that Li Shisong took advantage of his positions as Deputy Director and Director of the Secretariat Office of the Yunnan Provincial Government, Deputy Secretary-General of the Provincial Office of the Government, Deputy Secretary of the Honghe Prefecture, Director of the Industrial and Information Technology Commission of Yunnan Province, Director of the Industrial and Information Technology Department of Yunnan Province, Mayor of Qujing City, Member of the Yunnan Provincial Committee, and Secretary of the Qujing City Committee, to seek benefits for others, illegally accepting property from others in a particularly large amount, and should be held criminally responsible for the crime of bribery.

In June 2024, Li Shisong was investigated and removed from his position, becoming the 36th senior official to fall from grace last year and the third “tiger” in Yunnan to fall since the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. In mid-December of the same year, Li Shisong was expelled from the Party and transferred to judicial authorities, with his qualifications as a delegate to the 20th National Congress and the 11th Party Congress of Yunnan Province terminated. On January 3rd this year, Li Shisong was arrested.

Public information shows that Li Shisong was born in February 1969 in Yunlong County, Yunnan Province and had a long career in Yunnan.

In May 2016, Li Shisong was appointed as Deputy Prefect of Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan Province. From February 2018, he served as Director of the Industrial and Information Technology Commission of Yunnan Province and Director of the Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Bureau of the Province. Starting from October 2018, he held positions such as Director of the Industrial and Information Technology Department of Yunnan Province.

In January 2019, Li Shisong was appointed as Deputy Secretary of the Qujing City Committee of Yunnan Province, Deputy Mayor, and Acting Mayor. In February of the same year, he was promoted to Mayor. In November 2021, Li Shisong became a member of the Standing Committee of the Yunnan Provincial Committee and in December of the same year, he was appointed Secretary of the Qujing City Committee.

In October 2022, Li Shisong became an alternate member of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

Since December 2023, Li Shisong has served as Deputy Secretary of the Party Group of the Yunnan Provincial Government. In January 2024, he was appointed as the Executive Vice Governor of the Yunnan Provincial Government, a position he held until being investigated on June 25, 2024.
