In a screenshot circulating online, it was shown that on June 27, a farmer in Baoshan, Yunnan Province, received a subsidy of 0.79 yuan (Chinese currency, the same below) for land cultivation, distributed annually. Netizens criticized, “In the eyes of the pink [supporters], there are no people suffering from unequal distribution, only pride for my country.”
On July 1, a video blogger on Weibo, a major social media platform in China, uploaded two screenshots and criticized, “The two images create a strong impact – on one side, 175 counties in 16 provinces diverted over 4 billion yuan in agricultural subsidies, using the money for debt repayment, salary payments, and even gambling; on the other side, a farmer received 0.79 yuan in personal account for land cultivation… The reminder of receiving 0.79 yuan silently questions – how were the subsidies that should have gone to the farmers’ pockets ‘stolen’?”
The first screenshot shows that 175 counties in 16 provinces diverted 4.164 billion yuan, using the money for debt repayment at the local level, distributing salaries to public officials, and more. In addition, 104 counties in 16 provinces saw embezzlement of 478 million yuan by dishonest individuals, and 3,235 grassroots officials falsely reported and embezzled 23.2966 million yuan.
The second screenshot reveals that a farmer in Yunnan received a text message from the Agricultural and Rural Affairs Bureau of Longyang District in Baoshan City, stating, “Your personal account ending in 2899 received 0.79 yuan for ‘Central Land Cultivation Subsidy’ from the Agricultural and Rural Affairs Bureau of Longyang District in Baoshan City at 17:05 on June 27, 2025. The subsidy is distributed annually as part of the party and government’s policies to benefit farmers.”
This information immediately sparked attention on the internet.
Commentator and essayist Qiao Zhifeng mocked in a blog post, “Search for the content related to #land_subsidy 0.79 yuan#. Happiness, thank you…”
Netizens remarked, “I received 4.99 yuan in subsidies for a year, more than you!”; “Not only has the increase of farmers’ pensions to 500 yuan per month failed, even the current agricultural subsidies for farmers are less than eight cents. There are no people suffering from unequal distribution in the eyes of the pink [supporters], only pride for my country.”
