Yunlin Launches First Environmental Education Material in Taiwan Combining Environmental Highlights and Character Education

On May 9, 2024, the first environmental education material in Taiwan that combines environmental highlights and moral education, “A-Pao’s Adventure Chronicles,” was introduced during a book launch event. This book consists of 18 chapters, using simple and easy-to-understand language complemented by carefully crafted illustrations to present various environmental issues in daily life. It aims to instill the concept of environmental sustainability from schools to society, striving to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Cloud Lin County Magistrate Chang Li-Shan mentioned that “A-Pao’s Adventure Chronicles” is inspired by the idea that “every child is the most beloved treasure of their parents.” It incorporates environmental education and conservation concepts into children’s perspectives through dialogues with family members, interactions with classmates, and classroom learning. The book also highlights attractions such as Chenglong Wetland, Jianguo Village, and Forest Art Martial Arts Park, allowing students to learn about Yunlin, understand the importance of environmental protection, and cultivate a new generation of citizens who love the Earth, possess morals, courage, and serve as disaster prevention warriors and environmental protectors.

Chang Li-Shan emphasized that the development and publication of this book involved input from many individuals, expressing gratitude to all contributors and teams who helped create this unique environmental education material for Yunlin County. The book enables children to comprehend environmental issues in their daily lives and explore the scenic spots in Yunlin while promoting the values of environmental consciousness and beauty, making it highly recommended for readers to expand environmental education and create a more friendly and beautiful environment.

Director of the Environmental Protection Bureau, Zhang Qiao-Wei, highlighted the collaborative effort between the environmental education sector and the Moral Education Center to publish a book that elementary and middle school students or families can read. By integrating 16 core values of moral education, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Yunlin County’s renowned green attractions, the book endeavors to root the principles of environmental and moral education through localized, diversified, and indigenous approaches. The “Think about it” reflections at the end of each short article seek to enhance students’ awareness and action towards environmental protection, ensuring that environmental education is integrated into daily life effectively.
