The Presidential Office of the Republic of China issued a presidential decree today appointing former representative to Germany, Hsieh Chih-wei, as the representative to the European Union and Belgium. Hsieh Chih-wei expressed his commitment to continue giving his full dedication to his new role.
In a Facebook post, Hsieh Chih-wei responded to a friend’s message informing him of the newly issued presidential decree for his assignment to the European Union. He replied to his friend with five words: “With utmost sincerity and trepidation!”
Reflecting on his nine-year tenure in Germany, Hsieh Chih-wei mentioned that together with his colleagues at the Representative Office in Germany, they have worked diligently to help Germany’s political and social sectors understand the mutual cultural and technological exchanges and the joint defense of Taiwan’s security based on shared values between Taiwan and Germany. This has undoubtedly been a positive development for them.
Emphasizing the importance of timing along with significance, Hsieh Chih-wei stated that besides the importance of the task at hand, timing is crucial – one should not only focus on the positives but also consider the situation in Belgium. At this moment, holding the presidential decree, he is determined to continue giving his all.
Hsieh Chih-wei remarked that engaging in diplomatic efforts for Taiwan seems to be a delicate balance between two choices: either being uniquely valued or having valuable uniqueness, or perhaps a combination of both.
Born in Keelung, Taiwan, Hsieh Chih-wei graduated from the Department of German Studies at Soochow University and obtained a doctoral degree in German literature from the University of Bochum in Germany. He previously taught at the Department of German Studies at Soochow University. Hsieh Chih-wei first served as the representative to Germany in May 2005, then became the director of the Government Information Office in May 2007. In August 2016, he once again assumed the role of representative to Germany before taking over as the representative to the European Union and Belgium in August 2025.
