Recently, a circulating news about the cancellation of positions in the recruitment of key teachers in Xiamen’s Xiangan District has caused a stir on the internet. Due to the cancellation of multiple positions, no one applied for the recruitment, leading to the plan being scrapped.
According to a notice issued by the Education Bureau of Xiangan District in Xiamen, in a recent recruitment drive for key teachers, adjustments needed to be made as the number of qualified candidates for several subject areas such as Chinese, Physics, Math, Politics, and History did not meet the standard ratio.
For instance, in the recruitment of key high school biology, politics, and history teachers, there were originally 2 planned positions, but none of the candidates passed the qualification review, resulting in the cancellation of both positions.
Reports from mainland China indicate that a large number of education industry workers believe that the recruitment plan was affected due to the cancellation of positions.
In a statement from the Education Bureau of Xiangan District in Xiamen on April 26, a staff member from the publicity department mentioned that there were indeed no positions available for recruitment, and a contract-based hiring approach was adopted. Another staff member from the bureau commented, “Not very clear.”
In April this year, the Xiangan District Government of Xiamen issued a “Recruitment of Key Teachers Handbook”. The handbook stipulates that teachers recruited will follow the employment system of public institutions. However, the salary, benefits, social insurance, occupational annuities, housing provident fund, housing subsidies, and other aspects for the employed personnel will be managed according to the standards of in-service personnel in public institutions.
After registration, candidates will undergo an initial qualification review. If the ratio of candidates passing the qualification review to the number of planned hires does not reach 3:1, the recruitment plan for that position should be reduced or canceled.
Officials from the Education Bureau of Xiangan District stated that based on the regulations in the handbook, recruitment plans for certain positions were reduced or canceled. It is known that the initial qualification review was completed on April 14.
This issue has sparked discussions on social media platforms.
User “Langya Wang Qilang” revealed, “The difference between being categorized and uncategorized is huge. We, as non-categorized primary school teachers, receive 2500 (including social insurance), while categorized teachers receive around 6.6k (based on new hires).”
“Xue Yanyan” said, “Being a teacher is difficult, children cannot be criticized, various assessments are in place; the salary is already low, and if there is no categorization, then what is the point of the job?”
User “LanGo Loves Eating Golden Potatoes” commented, “Which key teacher would go to a school without categorization? Shortage of teachers, no categorization provided, aside from teaching, there are a lot of other issues.”
Weibo influencer “Zhenjiang Xiaoyangge” stated, “No categorization, low salary, numerous tasks, huge responsibilities, and retirement at 65. Honestly, the reason for tolerating low income is because of the categorization.”
Education blogger and Weibo influencer “Sunshine News Dissemination” shared, “Apart from having educational ideals, most teaching applicants also value summer and winter vacations and job stability, right? If there is no categorization, with a meager salary, complex tasks, and various relationships, who would be willing to take the job? This also reflects the current employment dilemma, which seems insurmountable and has become a vicious cycle.”
Weibo influencer “Zheng Yi Has Something to Say” remarked, “To be frank, the gradual cancellation of more and more positions is an inevitable trend because financially, the government cannot sustain the burden of so many categorized positions. The existing stockpile has not been managed, let alone adding more vacant positions; there’s simply not enough resources.”
