Wu Muxuan Forced to Sign “Taiwan China Commitment Letter,” Agent Confirms

Taiwanese actress Wu Muxuan traveled to mainland China last year to film the web drama “Hey! Come Closer,” where the production team required her to sign a “China-Taiwan Commitment Letter.” Otherwise, not only would the drama be taken down directly after filming, but the production company would also demand a compensation of 5 million RMB (about 20 million TWD). Her agent confirmed recently, “The commitment letter has been signed, otherwise there’s no chance of filming in China.”

In the mainland web drama “Hey! Come Closer” that Wu Muxuan starred in last year, she gained significant popularity. According to a report from Sanli News in February, Wu Muxuan was preparing for a new drama set to start filming in May, but news broke that “Hey! Come Closer” was facing a ban on Tencent’s platform with the production company seeking compensation of 5 million RMB. Wu Muxuan’s agent, Chen Xiaozhi, responded by explaining that the production side stated it was a “delay in broadcasting,” purely due to the lapse of submitting a particular document. He did not disclose the specific document, emphasizing that it was unrelated to political factors.

However, Chen Xiaozhi admitted in a recent interview with Central News Agency that they had signed the “China-Taiwan Commitment Letter,” revealing that “many artists have signed it, not just us,” stressing that “no matter how famous an artist is, they have to sign it; otherwise, they can forget about filming in China.” He further explained, “We initially signed only one copy and submitted it for government review, forgetting to sign another copy for the production team. We later supplemented the signing, allowing the drama to be aired.”

Chen Xiaozhi also clarified that the so-called “China-Taiwan” political stance commitment letter aims to have artists express their “political position,” bluntly put, “it’s about acknowledging the point of ‘China-Taiwan’,” meaning recognizing a unified China and prohibiting any hint of Taiwan independence activities. Concerned that an artist’s political stance might impact the drama’s broadcast, the casting team requests Taiwanese artists to sign the commitment letter for the smooth production and airing of the drama.
