On August 16, 2025, in Alaska, the highly anticipated summit between US President Trump (Trump) and Russian President Putin took place. Despite not reaching an agreement on ending the Russia-Ukraine war, Trump stated that the US and Russia have reached consensus on many points. Subsequently, the European Union and several governments responded to the Trump-Putin summit.
After a meeting lasting over three hours with Putin, Trump called Ukrainian President Zelensky and spoke with European and NATO leaders, inviting Zelensky to a meeting in the US next Monday.
Here are the responses from various countries following the Trump-Putin summit:
Ukrainian President Zelensky stated on social media platform X, “We support President Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the US, and Russia. Ukraine emphasizes that key issues need to be discussed at the leadership level, and the trilateral meeting format is very suitable.”
“On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, DC, to discuss all the details to end the killings and wars,” he said. “It is essential that Europe participates in every phase and works together with the US to ensure reliable security guarantees.”
After Trump briefed European leaders on the Alaska summit, leaders from the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and the EU issued a joint statement. They welcomed Trump’s efforts to “stop the killing in Ukraine, end Russia’s aggression war, and achieve fair and lasting peace.”
“We are also prepared to work with President Trump and President Zelensky to hold a trilateral summit with the support of Europe,” the leaders of various countries said.
“We are clear that Ukraine must have unbreakable security guarantees to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the statement said. “We welcome President Trump’s statement regarding the US’s readiness to provide security guarantees. The ‘Coalition of the Willing’ is ready to play an active role. Ukrainian armed forces should not be restricted, nor should their cooperation with third countries be limited. Russia cannot veto Ukraine’s path to joining the EU and NATO.”
“Ukraine will determine its territorial issues on its own. International borders must not be changed by force,” the statement said. “As long as the killings in Ukraine continue, we are ready to continue exerting pressure on Russia. We will continue to strengthen sanctions and broader economic measures, putting pressure on Russia’s war economy until achieving a just and lasting peace.”
EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas stated that the US has the ability to compel Russia to engage in serious negotiations. The EU will work with Ukraine and the US to ensure that Russia’s aggressive actions do not succeed, and to ensure that any peace is sustainable.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban wrote on Facebook, “For years, we have witnessed the two largest nuclear powers, the US and Russia, dismantling their cooperation frameworks and sending unfriendly messages to each other. This situation has now come to an end, and today’s world is safer than yesterday.”
Apart from issuing a joint statement with the EU, UK Prime Minister Stammer also issued a separate statement, saying, “President Trump’s efforts bring us closer to ending Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine than at any time before. His leadership in ending this slaughter is commendable.”
Stammer welcomed the US’s openness to providing strong security guarantees for Ukraine in cooperation with Europe, saying this is an important development crucial for deterring Putin from launching another war.
Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “India welcomes the summit held by Trump and Putin in Alaska, and appreciates the progress made during the summit.”
“Progress can only be made through dialogue and diplomacy. The world hopes to see an end to the conflict in Ukraine soon,” Jaiswal said.
Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala stated that the results of the Alaska summit confirm that while the US and its allies seek a peaceful path, Putin remains interested only in expanding territory and restoring the Soviet empire.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated on Facebook, “(The US and Russia) Presidents have initiated a crucial process in Alaska.”
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard stated that the Swedish government will engage in close dialogue with Ukraine, as well as with European and transatlantic partners, on the future direction.
“It is apparent that pressure on Russia must be increased to compel an end to the war and lay the foundation for a just and lasting peace based on international law. Sweden’s military, political, and civilian support for Ukraine remains unwavering,” the statement said.
