Why Mrs. Wasn’t Present for Award Ceremony: Tony Leung Chiu-wai’s Witty Response

At the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards ceremony held on April 27th, actor Lau Ching Wan won the Best Actor award for the fourth time with his performance in the movie “Dad.” When asked why his wife, Gigi Leung, did not accompany him to the awards ceremony, Lau Ching Wan humorously replied: “Her shadow is right in front of me.”

The 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards were announced on the evening of April 27th, and Lau Ching Wan, who has previously won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor three times, achieved another milestone. With his outstanding acting skills, he won the Best Actor award for the fourth time for his role in “Dad.” When he received the trophy from presenter Carina Lau, he expressed his gratitude, saying, “Thank you to my team, my family, my wife, and especially ‘Dad,’ that father figure.”

When asked why his wife Gigi Leung did not attend the awards ceremony with him, Lau Ching Wan humorously responded during a backstage interview: “Gigi is already a relatively private person. She is mainly in charge of behind-the-scenes work now. Although she didn’t appear today, she has been involved in all the arrangements for me. Many times, she would rent a room in a nearby hotel, help me change clothes, prepare my styling, and show me unwavering care.”

Lau Ching Wan also revealed that Gigi Leung always reminds him to drink more water. “She knows that I rarely drink water when I’m working, especially during awards ceremonies. It’s troublesome if you drink too much and have to go to the bathroom.”

As for whether his wife will wait for him to celebrate at home, Lau Ching Wan said that Gigi Leung understands him well and they did not have any special plans to celebrate. He joked that his wife usually cooks, so they don’t have to wait for an award to have a big meal, otherwise, he would be very thin.

Although Lau Ching Wan has now won the Best Actor award at the Hong Kong Film Awards for the fourth time, he admitted, “Every time I receive the Best Actor award, it still feels very fresh, and I still get nervous before going on stage to accept the award. This award reminds me that I am indeed a fortunate person.”
