White House to Submit Funding Recovery Plan to Congress Following Musk’s Suggestion

The White House is planning to submit a budget reduction plan to the U.S. Congress next week aimed at reclaiming $9.4 billion in budget funds. House Speaker Mike Johnson has also pledged to take “swift action” to legislate the budget cuts proposed by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

According to The Hill, a spokesperson from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) confirmed this news to the media on Wednesday, May 28th. Prior to this, the American news website Axios was the first to report on the White House’s plan to cut $9.4 billion from the budget.

The plan will include cuts to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The CPB provides federal funding to National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), and President Trump signed an executive order on May 1st instructing the CPB to “cease direct funding” to these two news organizations, citing their partisan and biased nature. The USAID has already been largely disbanded earlier this year.

The budget reduction plan has been previewed for weeks now and was initially expected to be submitted to Congress by the end of April. However, the plan was delayed as the House was busy drafting the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which covers several of Trump’s key priorities including tax cuts, defense, and border spending.

Since Trump returned to the White House in January, senior advisor Elon Musk has been leading the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency to comprehensively reform and streamline federal agencies to eliminate waste and reduce costs. However, in a recent interview video aired by CBS, the billionaire expressed his disappointment with the House passing and submitting the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” to the Senate last week, stating that “this increases the budget deficit… and undermines the work of the DOGE team.”

House Speaker Johnson highly praised the work of the Department of Government Efficiency on social media, stating that “@ElonMusk and the entire @DOGE team have done incredible work, exposing waste, fraud, and abuse throughout the federal government,” including the “outlandish spending of the USAID.”

Johnson hinted that the House will promptly bring the White House’s spending reduction plan to a full house vote.

“When the White House submits the fund reclamation plan to the House, we will take quick action to incorporate these cuts into law through legislative measures,” he added.
