Whip Up Delicious Dishes: Young Kitchen Gods Creative Speech Competition Now Open for Registration

The Northern California Chinese School Association announced that it will hold the “Speak Good Food: Little Chef Creative Speech Competition” on December 15 (Sunday). The event is sponsored by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission and registration is now open.

President of the Northern California Chinese School Association, Li Naya, stated that the purpose of this speech competition is to allow children to learn daily language in a joyful atmosphere and encourage them to seek cooking tips from family members. The competition emphasizes the application of everyday language and has categories for parent-child pairs and TCML groups, welcoming parents, grandparents, and foreign friends to participate together.

Chuang Yashu, director of the Overseas Education Center, expressed that the competition is in response to the Overseas Chinese Language and Culture Festival to promote the beauty of traditional Chinese characters. She appreciated the Northern California Chinese School Association for organizing the competition and hopes that students from Chinese schools can introduce dishes and cooking skills in Chinese, showcasing the flavors of Chinese cuisine. A special TCML group has been added to the competition to welcome students from Taiwanese Mandarin learning centers to participate, demonstrating creativity and experiencing the beauty and meaning behind traditional Chinese characters.

The competition is divided into six groups based on age: Elementary School Group A (kindergarten to 2nd grade), Elementary School Group B (3rd to 5th grade), Middle School Group (6th to 8th grade), High School Group (9th to 12th grade), Parent-Child Group (parents and children, or grandparents and grandchildren), and TCML Group (all students).

The scoring criteria include content (30%), creativity (25%), physical performance and expression skills (25%), pronunciation and tone (15%), and time control (5%). The speech time is limited to 3 minutes and 30 seconds, with a deduction of 2 points for exceeding 3 minutes and 45 seconds or falling short of 3 minutes and 15 seconds. A 5-point deduction will be made for speeches shorter than 3 minutes or longer than 4 minutes, and judges will stop the speech at 4 minutes. TCML group students are not restricted by this time limit to encourage them.

Following the competition, an award ceremony will be held immediately, and the entire competition, award ceremony, and exciting moments will be live-streamed on the ANCCS official website, Facebook, and YouTube simultaneously.

All participants will receive certificates and prizes. In addition to certificates, the top three winners in each group will receive gift cards worth $100, $80, and $50 respectively.
