What new domestically produced weapons will Ukraine equip?

Despite relentless bombing by the Russian military in Ukraine, Ukraine has not given up on developing its own new weapons systems. Ukraine currently relies mainly on advanced weapons and ammunition provided by the West, but it also aims to increase the variety and quantity of domestically produced weapons in order to enhance its self-sufficiency. In February of this year, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense approved the military’s use of nearly 15 new domestically-produced weapons and military equipment.

Today, let’s talk about Ukraine’s new domestically produced weapons, including the Bohdana 155mm truck-mounted howitzer, the extended-range Neptune cruise missile, the SD-300 Coral medium-range air defense missile system, and the Storm-SM anti-tank missile carrier.

The French Caesar self-propelled howitzer has been popular among Ukrainian forces since France provided assistance to Ukraine, and France plans to provide Ukraine with 78 new Caesar self-propelled guns within this year. In fact, Ukraine had already begun developing truck-mounted howitzers before the outbreak of the Russo-Ukrainian war, such as the 2S22 “Bohdana” 155mm truck-mounted howitzer, which is designed and manufactured entirely according to NATO standards and can use ammunition provided by Western countries.

The Neptune, converted into a cruise missile, is also known as “Neptune 2.0”. On August 14, 2023, two Neptune 2.0 missiles, in coordination with drones, successfully destroyed the S-400 air defense system deployed in western Crimea. This marked the successful debut of the Neptune 2.0, achieving victory from the outset.

During the “Weapons and Security-2021” international exhibition held in Kyiv in June 2021, Ukraine’s Luch State Design Bureau unveiled a medium-range air defense missile system called “Coral” or SD-300. According to the introduction, the SD-300 project started in 2016 with the aim of replacing Ukraine’s aging Soviet-era S-300 system, making it Ukraine’s first domestically produced air defense system.

The Storm-S tank destroyer is a product from the 1980s and is quite outdated. Ukraine has therefore conducted a deep upgrade on it, naming it “Storm-SM” (Shturm-SM). The Storm-SM project began before the Russo-Ukrainian war, retaining the original track chassis but using new missiles developed by Ukraine with various interchangeable warheads, as well as a new electro-optical targeting system.
