Taiwanese meteorological experts pointed out that this morning (7th), until 6:12 am, Miaoli has set the record for the lowest temperature on the plains of the island since the beginning of winter. Starting from Thursday (9th), the weather in Taiwan will turn “very wet and cold,” with the possibility of snowfall in high mountains.
Associate Professor Wu Derong from the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at National Central University of Taiwan mentioned today on Sanli News that the latest European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model simulation as of 8:00 pm on the 8th showed that today is expected to be clear and stable in all regions. Northern Taiwan will be cool, while central and southern regions will be comfortable during the day but cooler in the mornings and evenings. Tomorrow (8th), the western half of the country will be clear and stable, while the eastern half will experience a mix of sunshine and clouds with occasional light rain. Daytime temperatures will rise slightly, making the weather pleasant but still cool in the mornings and evenings.
Professor Wu pointed out that due to the influence of cold air masses from the mainland and “nighttime radiative cooling,” some areas on the plains will see temperatures drop below 5 degrees in the early morning, urging people to keep warm. Today’s temperature ranges across the regions are expected to be 10-19 degrees Celsius in the north, 9-24 degrees in the central region, 9-25 degrees in the south, and 12-25 degrees in the east.
He further explained that according to the latest model simulations from various countries, from the 9th to the morning of the 13th, cold air will strengthen once again leading to a further drop in temperatures. From the 9th to the 12th in the mornings, there will be significant rainfall in the northern and eastern parts of Taiwan, leading to wet and cold weather. Especially on the 10th, the daytime high in northern Taiwan is expected to be only 13 degrees with very little temperature difference throughout the day, making it exceptionally damp and cold, requiring extra caution. There is a high probability of snowfall above 3,000 meters (such as Hehuan Mountain and Xueshan) and also a chance above 2,000 meters (such as Taiping Mountain and Lalashan).
In addition, he mentioned that on the 12th, the daytime will turn clear and cold, with temperatures dropping to 13 degrees by the morning of the 13th due to “nighttime radiative cooling.” The European model indicates that the strengthening cold air will elevate the previous cold air mass to a strongly reinforced cold air mass (10 degrees < Taipei monitoring station ≤ 12 degrees). Some areas on the plains can still expect temperatures to drop to around 5 degrees in the early morning. People are advised to stay warm for their health, and the agricultural and fishing industries should pay attention to the Meteorological Bureau's "low-temperature special report" and take preventive measures early.
He added that according to the latest model simulations from various countries, from the daytime of the 13th to the 14th, clear and stable weather is expected across the regions as the cold air weakens gradually. Temperatures will gradually rise each day but remain relatively low in the mornings and evenings. Beyond the 15th, there is some divergence in the model simulations, which will need to be observed closely.
