Wang Jianjun, Vice Chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, Removed from Office

The Chinese Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) Vice Chairman, Wang Jianjun, who is 57 years old, was removed from his position recently following an investigation while he was in office. According to a State Council appointment and removal announcement from the Chinese Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security on May 21, Wang Jianjun was relieved of his duties as the CSRC Vice Chairman.

On the evening of April 30, the official announcement from the Chinese government stated that Wang Jianjun, a member of the party committee and Vice Chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, was suspected of serious violations of discipline and law, and is currently under investigation.

Public records show that Wang Jianjun was born in March 1968 in Langzhong, Sichuan Province, and began working in July 1991. In April 1997, Wang Jianjun joined the CSRC and has been working within the regulatory system for nearly 28 years.

In December 2012, Wang Jianjun was appointed as the director of the Market Regulation Department of the China Securities Regulatory Commission.

From July 2014 to March 2015, Wang Jianjun concurrently served as the director of the Research Center of the CSRC and the dean of the Beijing Securities and Futures Research Institute.

From April 2016 to October 2021, Wang Jianjun successively held the positions of General Manager and Chairman of the Board of Directors (Deputy Ministerial Level) of the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.

In October 2021, after more than 5 years leading the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, Wang Jianjun returned to the CSRC as Vice Chairman, until he was investigated at the end of last month.

The leadership of the CSRC has always consisted of “one chairman, four vice chairmen, and one discipline inspection and supervision group leader.” It is worth noting that several former CSRC chairmen and vice chairmen have been removed from their positions or demoted.

In June 2024, former CSRC Chairman Yi Huiman transitioned to a “second-tier” position in the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which was seen as a downgrade.

Yi Huiman’s predecessor as CSRC Chairman, Xiao Gang, was removed from office in 2016. Another former CSRC Chairman, Liu Shiyu, was investigated in May 2019, and in October was removed from office and demoted to a level-one researcher, effectively losing his qualification as a delegate to the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.

In July 2024, CSRC Vice Chairman Fang Xinghai was removed from office; in December 2022, another CSRC Vice Chairman was also removed from office.
