Having certain positive qualities can enhance your career prospects, according to Donna Morris, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at Walmart. Morris pointed out that one warning sign indicating a person’s difficulty in advancing in the workplace is when someone behaves like a “Debbie Downer”. She emphasized that no one wants to hire such individuals who bring a negative atmosphere with their constant complaints and pessimism.
“Debbie Downer” originates from a character in the American comedy show “Saturday Night Live”, representing someone always exhibiting a negative attitude and being a killjoy. They are known to dampen the mood around them and hinder progress with their contrary opinions and obstructive behavior towards new projects and ideas.
Morris explained that being a “Debbie Downer” can make it challenging for individuals to establish the necessary networking for advancement or gain the trust of superiors and managers in new initiatives. She stated that individuals who are constantly negative and focus on problems rather than solutions are not valued in the workplace.
“I like those who bring up problems and offer solutions.” Morris highlighted.
At 57 years old, Morris has played a key role in shaping the employee experience for 2.1 million people since the outbreak of the Covid pandemic, as reported by CNBC Make It.
While Morris suggests avoiding the “Debbie Downer” attitude, she also cautions against adopting a “toxic optimism” approach, where individuals pretend everything is fine even in challenging situations. It is unrealistic to always maintain a happy demeanor.
So, what qualities make someone subjectively welcomed in a team?
Morris pointed out several qualities that differentiate successful employees from underperforming ones. She values employees who “deliver expected results on time”, emphasizing that early and more deliveries are better than late and fewer ones.
Another positive trait she praises is being open to opportunities and taking on additional responsibilities voluntarily. Effective employees also present solutions along with identifying problems, or seek help promptly instead of waiting for issues to escalate.
Furthermore, showing teamwork and initiative by offering assistance (even without being asked) can demonstrate your proactive attitude, such as mentoring new interns or proposing ideas to address issues your boss has been dealing with.
