Inner Mongolian Deputy Minister-level official Wang Bo has been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, without the possibility of sentence reduction or parole, for accepting bribes totaling over 449 million yuan. Wang Bo was arrested in June last year.
On October 14th, the Yichang Intermediate People’s Court in Hubei Province publicly announced the first-instance verdict in the bribery case of Wang Bo, former Deputy Secretary of the Party Group and Deputy Director of the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region People’s Congress Standing Committee.
Wang Bo was found guilty of bribery and sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, deprived of political rights for life, and had all personal property confiscated. After the expiration of the two-year reprieve period of the death penalty being commuted to life imprisonment, he will face life imprisonment without the possibility of sentence reduction or parole.
The court stated that from the first half of 2003 to May 2024, Wang Bo took advantage of his position to provide assistance in business operations, project contracting, and job adjustments to relevant units and individuals through acts of other national staff, receiving a total of over 449 million yuan in gifts.
On June 3, 2024, Wang Bo was officially investigated, expelled from the Party in December, stripped of his benefits and transferred to judicial authorities, and on June 26 this year, the Yichang Intermediate People’s Court held a trial in the case.
67-year-old Wang Bo, a native of Wengniute Banner in Inner Mongolia, had served in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia for many years, and held positions such as Deputy Mayor and Deputy Secretary of Chifeng. In October 2006, he became Deputy Mayor of Baotou, Inner Mongolia, and later served as the Mayor of Bayannur City.
In April 2010, Wang Bo replaced Tang Aijun as Deputy Secretary and Mayor of Hohhot Municipal Party Committee. Tang Aijun was investigated in August 2014 and sentenced to 12 years in prison for bribery.
In November 2011, Wang Bo was promoted to Vice Chairman of Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region. From January 2018 to 2022, Wang Bo held positions including Vice Director and Deputy Secretary of the Party Group of the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region People’s Congress Standing Committee, and Chairman of the Finance and Economic Committee of the People’s Congress.
