US strengthens review of student visa applications, lawyer offers advice to Chinese students

The U.S. government is requiring international students applying for visas to adjust their social media account privacy settings to “public” for reviewing their online activities and comments. Lawyers believe this is not a sudden development, as the U.S. has previously not been thorough enough in their scrutiny, and they advise Chinese students to distance themselves from the Chinese Communist Party.

The U.S. Department of State has announced the resumption of foreign student visa applications suspended since May 27, with a comprehensive review of applicants, including scrutiny of online content. To facilitate online reviews, applicants are asked to adjust their social media privacy settings to “public.”

In a statement released by the U.S. Department of State on June 18, it was mentioned that every visa review decision is crucial for national security. The U.S. must remain vigilant to ensure that individuals entering the country do not pose a threat to American people and national interests, and applicants must credibly demonstrate their eligibility for the visa they are applying for, including engaging in activities consistent with their entry conditions.

Regarding the increased scrutiny of student visas by the U.S. government, Chen Chuangchuang, Executive Director of the Chinese Democratic Party National Committee and a lawyer, stated in an interview on June 20 that this issue is not sudden. He emphasized that immigration has been a top issue since President Trump took office, with a focus on border security and deporting illegal immigrants.

Chen believed that although the U.S. previously conducted checks, the efforts were inadequate. He advised Chinese students to clarify their intentions – to either come to the U.S. to learn and contribute positively or stay and support the Chinese Communist Party, suggesting the latter option is not suitable.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had previously emphasized that visiting the U.S. is a privilege granted only to those who respect American laws and values. In a column on Fox News website, he outlined the importance of revoking visas when threats arise, emphasizing that under the Trump administration, protecting American citizens is a top priority supported by the law.

In response to the U.S. decision to revoke visas for Chinese students, Antonio Graceffo, Ph.D., stated in an article on English Epoch Times on June 7 that the move is crucial for national security. The U.S. has been inadvertently nurturing and funding future military and technology talents for the Chinese Communist Party.

In conclusion, the U.S. government’s decision is not a blanket measure against Chinese individuals but is aimed at the CCP and its followers. Therefore, for self-preservation, it is imperative for students to quickly disassociate themselves from the CCP. This includes refraining from joining the party, understanding its authoritarian nature, and the importance of democratic values and societal understanding. It is crucial for students to make their intentions clear and distance themselves from any anti-American sentiments to secure their entry into the United States.
