The US military said on Sunday (September 29) that they had killed 37 armed militants in Syria affiliated with terrorist groups Islamic State and al-Qaeda, including two senior members of these organizations.
The US Central Command stated that on Tuesday (September 24) they conducted a strike operation in northwest Syria, targeting a senior member of the al-Qaeda-linked group Hurras al-Deen and 8 others. This senior member was responsible for overseeing the military operations of this group.
Additionally, the US military also announced that on September 16 they carried out a “major airstrike” on an Islamic State training camp located at a remote undisclosed location in central Syria. This attack resulted in the deaths of 28 terrorists, including “at least 4 Syrian leaders”.
The statement from the US Central Command said, “This airstrike will weaken Islamic State’s ability to conduct operations against American interests, our allies, and partners.”
There are approximately 900 US troops stationed in Syria, primarily to prevent the resurgence of the terrorist group Islamic State. The organization seized large swathes of territory after attacking Iraq and Syria in 2014.
The US military provides advice and support to their main ally in northeastern Syria, the Syrian Democratic Forces led by the Kurds. The areas controlled by this group are strategically located near Iran-backed armed groups, including an important border crossing near the Iraq border.
