US-Japan-South Korea trilateral summit’s anniversary statement, Lai Ching-te: Taiwan safeguards peace.

On August 19, 2024, the United States, Japan, and South Korea issued a joint statement to mark the one-year anniversary of the “Camp David Summit,” reaffirming the importance of peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. In response to this, President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Lai Ching-te, expressed gratitude, emphasizing that maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region is a shared responsibility, and Taiwan is committed to safeguarding it alongside global partners.

The White House released the joint statement of the U.S., Japan, and South Korea on the one-year anniversary of the “Camp David Summit” on the 17th, highlighting the continued deepening of trilateral partnerships in security, technology, and economy based on the “Camp David Principles” revealed at the 2023 summit. The statement also reiterated the commitment of the three parties to uphold peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, maintain a shared vision, and collectively address major global challenges.

President Lai Ching-te of the Republic of China (Taiwan) retweeted a post by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on the social media platform X on the 18th. He stated, “On the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the U.S.-Japan-South Korea Summit, I thank the leaders of the three countries for reaffirming their commitment to regional security. Peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region are a shared responsibility, and Taiwan is dedicated to safeguarding it together with global partners. Our shared vision makes us stronger.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) stated that regional security in the Indo-Pacific is a universally concerning and important issue in the international community. Recent joint statements from various multilateral and bilateral platforms, including the U.S.-Japan-South Korea trilateral dialogues, trilateral defense minister meetings, the U.S.-Japan-Philippines trilateral summit, “U.S.-EU Indo-Pacific Strategic Consultations,” “Australia-U.S. Ministerial Consultations” (AUSMIN), the U.S.-Italy, and the U.S.-Japan, all emphasize the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and opposing any changes to the status quo.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) emphasized that as an essential member of the Indo-Pacific region, Taiwan will continue to collaborate with the U.S., Japan, South Korea, and all like-minded partners to jointly safeguard peace, stability, and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region.
