Iran launched retaliatory missile attacks against Israel, prompting the United States Embassy in Israel to issue a security alert on Tuesday (October 1). The embassy instructed all U.S. government employees and their families to shelter in place until further notice, in light of the current security situation.
The security alert stated that in response to safety events, the U.S. Embassy may further “restrict or prohibit U.S. government employees and their dependents from traveling to certain areas in Israel (including the Old City of Jerusalem) and the West Bank.”
The U.S. Embassy also reminded American citizens that security incidents, such as mortar and rocket attacks, as well as unmanned aerial system (UAS) infiltrations, can occur frequently without warning. Therefore, individuals are advised to remain cautious and enhance their personal security awareness.
“The security environment remains complex and may rapidly change based on political developments and recent events,” the embassy stated.
Furthermore, the embassy encouraged U.S. citizens to consult current travel advisories and national information for Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. It warned that due to escalating security and regional tensions, travel to these areas carries risks. Moreover, it cautioned against visiting Gaza and areas within 2.5 miles of the borders between Israel and Lebanon and Syria.
The U.S. Embassy issued the security alert amidst a sharp deterioration of Israel’s security situation. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that Iran launched missiles towards Israel on Tuesday, triggering alarms across the country.
During the Iranian missile attack, CNN reporter Jeremy Diamond was in northern Israel. Diamond mentioned that the missile strikes on Tuesday could be an escalated version of Iran’s April attack on Israel. CNN’s cameras captured at least a dozen missiles flying over Tel Aviv.
According to information released by White House spokesperson Emilie Simons, prior to Iran’s attack on Tuesday, President Biden held a meeting with Vice President Harris and senior national security officials to discuss Iran’s anticipated ballistic missile assault on Israel.
