US Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, Attacked

The US Embassy in Iraq was attacked on Tuesday night, according to a statement by a spokesperson on Wednesday (September 11). The diplomatic facility in Baghdad suffered the attack, but there have been no reports of casualties yet, and assessments of the damage are currently underway.

Security sources revealed to Reuters that around 11 p.m. on Tuesday (September 10), two rockets landed near the “Camp Victory” US military base located close to Baghdad Airport.

In a statement, the US Embassy said, “On Tuesday, September 10, around 23:00, a security incident occurred at the US diplomatic facility ‘Baghdad Diplomatic Services Compound’.” Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties, and we are assessing the losses and the reasons behind the attack. Our assessment is ongoing,” the statement said.

Following the incident, no armed group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

One of the Iran-backed Iraqi armed factions, Kataib Hezbollah, released a statement trying to distance themselves from the event.

Kataib Hezbollah stated that, based on the timing of the attack, it appeared to be aimed at disrupting the visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Iraq starting on Wednesday.

In an earlier statement released on Wednesday, the armed group urged Iraqi security forces to investigate the attack.

Since the eruption of the Gaza War, Iranian-aligned armed groups in Iraq have frequently attacked US forces stationed in the Middle East. On August 5, the Al Asad airbase in Iraq was attacked, resulting in at least five US military personnel being injured.

Iraq serves as a regional partner for both the United States and Iran. The US has 2,500 troops stationed in Iraq, while Iran-backed armed factions in Iraq are associated with Iraqi security forces.
