US Congresswoman Proposes Bill to Create Pathway for Undocumented Immigrants to Obtain Green Cards

On Tuesday, a Democratic congressman proposed a new bill to provide a pathway to permanent residency (green card) for undocumented immigrant workers in industries such as agriculture, healthcare, and construction.

New Mexico federal congressman Gabe Vasquez introduced the “Strengthening Our Workforce Act,” aimed at stabilizing the labor market, protecting immigrant families, and supporting small businesses facing labor shortages.

The proposed bill covers a wide range of industries including healthcare, agriculture, energy, construction, education, hospitality, emergency response, home care, and childcare, which are considered essential sectors for the functioning of the US economy and society.

According to the bill, undocumented immigrant workers who meet specific criteria can obtain a two-year “conditional status.” These criteria include:

– Proof of employment in the specified industries;
– Continuous residence in the US since January 1, 2024;
– Working at least 100 days per year for two consecutive years in a qualifying industry;
– Payment of fines and maintaining a good record of law abidance.

Upon completion of the two-year conditional status, eligible undocumented immigrant workers can apply for permanent residency.

The bill was co-sponsored by several Democratic congressmen, including Juan Vargas from California, Nydia Velázquez from New York, Delia Ramirez from Illinois, and Angie Craig from Minnesota. Supporters believe that this measure will bring stability to businesses facing labor shortages.

In a press release on Tuesday, Vasquez stated, “Those who work hard, follow the rules, and play crucial roles in the economy should not be forced to live in the shadows or face the fear of mass deportation. These individuals contribute to our communities, provide for their families, care for loved ones, and keep our economy functioning. It is time to provide them with a dignified path to obtain legal status, which they deserve and businesses in America need. This is about humanity, fairness, and the strength of our long-term economic development.”

Some immigrant rights organizations and business groups have expressed their support. Marcela Díaz, executive director of Somos Un Pueblo Unido, said the bill “provides a fair pathway to permanent residency for workers in essential positions.”

Frank Knapp Jr., head of the Secure Growth Initiative, a small business alliance, said that deportation actions are exacerbating labor shortages and harming local economies. He stated, “The proposal aims to end the chaos that is leading to declining incomes for small businesses and reduced consumer spending.”

If passed, the bill would provide a pathway to legal status for millions of undocumented immigrants. However, its fate in a Republican-dominated Congress remains uncertain.
