Unsolved Case of Chinese Engineer Killing Wife: House Estate Listed for Sale

The shocking case of former Google Chinese engineer Liren Chen killing his wife Xuanyi Yu has sent ripples through the entire Chinese community. While the final verdict of the case remains pending, the couple’s property has already been put up for sale.

Both of them were alumni of Tsinghua University in Beijing and later worked as engineers at Google. On the surface, they appeared to be a successful and glamorous couple, which makes the tragic ending of a beautiful wife being fatally assaulted by her husband all the more unsettling, leaving people with many questions and reflections.

The suspect, Liren Chen, has appeared in court for hearings twice but has not yet faced a formal trial. However, the couple’s property has already been listed for sale.

Prior reporting from Epoch Times indicated that before the incident, the couple had applied for a loan to purchase a detached house with four bedrooms and two bathrooms located at 714 Valley Way in Santa Clara. Last Saturday (May 18), the property was newly listed for sale on the real estate website Zillow, with images on the website bearing a striking resemblance to those used in media reports.

Currently, the listed price for the property is $2.12 million. The website describes the location as being in the heart of Santa Clara, with easy access to transportation and just a few minutes’ bike ride away from Apple Park. The house has been refurbished inside and out within about a year, and even the carpet on the stairs is newly laid.

This house, built in 1960, was sold on April 6, 2023 (presumably bought by this couple) for nearly $2.05 million. Situated in the central area of Silicon Valley where property prices are currently skyrocketing, the estimated value of this property on the website is $2,446,200, significantly higher than the listed price.

According to Zillow, there are currently no open houses scheduled for this property, and potential buyers will need to be accompanied by a real estate agent for viewings.

“Sing Tao Daily” also reported the news of the property being listed for sale.

Moreover, “Sing Tao Daily” cited the “Southern Metropolis Daily” report stating that a hearing on the handling of the estate of this case would be held on the morning of May 23. Documents reveal that a petition for the handling of the estate was submitted on February 13 this year.

In Silicon Valley, where high-end properties abound, this detached house may not be considered a luxury mansion. However, looking at the pictures displayed on the sales page of the website, with lush greenery in the front yard and vibrant flowers in the backyard, this place seems to be an ideal location for many prospective homebuyers to realize their dream of homeownership, making it difficult to associate with the brutal violence of the case.

Previously reported by Epoch Times, on January 16, police entered the residence after receiving a distress call to find the deceased victim “suffered severe blunt force injuries, with copious amounts of blood on her head, the floor, walls, and behind the bedroom door. Police declared her dead.”

The officer’s report stated that at the time, Liren Chen’s right hand was severely swollen and purple, with his clothes, legs, arms, and hands covered in blood. However, there were no signs of tearing on his body.

Although the police did not find the weapon responsible for the victim’s blunt force injuries, they discovered a pair of bloodstained sandals that matched Chen’s size. The authorities believe that Chen wore these sandals while standing or crouching and repeatedly striking the victim’s head with his hands. Chen also told the police, “I beat my wife with my fists.”

Currently, Liren Chen is charged with the murder of his wife. The prosecution’s indictment states that the defendant engaged in severe violence and posed a serious threat of bodily harm, carrying out extremely cruel actions.
