Ukrainian Drones Attack Moscow, Forcing Closure of Two Airports

Russian officials have stated that on Sunday morning (June 8), Ukrainian drones attacked Moscow, forcing the temporary closure of two major airports.

The Federal Air Transport Agency of Russia stated in a press release, “Temporary landing restrictions have been imposed on Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports to ensure the safety of civilian aircraft.” These restrictions were lifted later on Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced on the social media platform Telegram that the Russian air defense forces destroyed several Ukrainian drones flying towards the city on Sunday morning, and emergency services were on site cleaning up the wreckage of the drones.

Furthermore, Moscow claimed later on Sunday that its forces had advanced to the Dnipropetrovsk region in eastern Ukraine for the first time in a three-year offensive. This significant military action by Russia comes as peace negotiations have reached a standstill, however, this claim cannot be independently verified.

Currently, Moscow is engaging in negotiations with Kyiv while repeatedly rejecting calls from Ukraine, Europe, and former US President Donald Trump for a comprehensive and unconditional ceasefire.

On June 4, President Trump stated after a call with Russian President Putin, “It was a very good conversation, but it will not bring immediate peace. President Putin did indicate that he had to respond to recent attacks on Russian airports by Ukraine, and his tone was very strong.”
