Ukrainian bipartisan lawmakers visit Taiwan, hope for bilateral cooperation to resist authoritarianism.

A bipartisan group of Ukrainian parliamentarians visited Taiwan, led by Kniazhytskyi, expressing concerns over Ukraine’s struggles against Russian aggression with Chinese military support and emphasizing the importance of Taiwan-Ukraine cooperation to combat authoritarian expansionism.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China released a statement on the evening of the 5th announcing that Foreign Minister Joseph Wu hosted a welcoming banquet for the Ukrainian parliamentary delegation led by Kniazhytskyi for exchanges during their visit to Taiwan. This marks the first bipartisan delegation from the Ukrainian Parliament to visit Taiwan since 1993, signifying significant progress in bilateral relations.

Minister Wu highlighted that since Russia’s illegal aggression against Ukraine in 2022, Taiwan has collaborated with countries such as Poland, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to assist in rebuilding schools, churches, hospitals in Ukraine, as well as supporting the implementation of humanitarian projects in areas like 5G communications, smart healthcare, and information technology training in Ukraine.

Under President Tsai Ing-wen’s values-based diplomatic policy, Minister Wu stressed the shared values of democracy and freedom between Taiwan and Ukraine, reaffirming Taiwan’s commitment to collaborating with like-minded nations to promote global stability and prosperity.

He further expressed admiration for the resilience of the Ukrainian people in resisting Russian aggression and hoped that the parliamentary visit would open a new chapter in Taiwan-Ukraine relations, facilitating substantive cooperation in various sectors and laying a solid foundation for future official dialogues and people-to-people exchanges, fostering enduring friendship between Taiwan and Ukraine.

During his speech, Kniazhytskyi, the head of the delegation visiting Taiwan for the third time, expressed gratitude on behalf of the Ukrainian people for Taiwan’s humanitarian aid. He reiterated Ukraine’s struggles against Russian aggression and emphasized the need for strengthened Taiwan-Ukraine cooperation to counter authoritarian expansionism, hoping that the visit would enhance future official exchanges between the two countries and welcomed Taiwanese investments in Ukraine.

Additionally, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China, Wu Chih-chung met with the delegation on the afternoon of the 4th to discuss Taiwan-Ukraine relations, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and cross-strait relations, emphasizing Taiwan’s unwavering support for Ukraine since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and coordinating humanitarian assistance with European countries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China stated that the bipartisan Ukrainian parliamentary delegation comprising 9 members visited Taiwan from the 4th to the 8th, representing various key political parties. During their stay, they met with senior officials of the Republic of China government, visited the Legislative Yuan, and attended the “Quad Forum: 2025 Indo-Pacific Security Dialogue.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also mentioned that the delegation would visit Taiwan’s aerospace industry, smart healthcare, and precision machinery sectors to gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s technological and innovative capabilities, further enhancing economic and trade exchanges between Taiwan and Ukraine, creating opportunities for Taiwanese businesses to participate in Ukraine’s reconstruction and seek commercial prospects.
