Typhoon Yagi lands in Zhangpu, Fujian, Wind power equipment snapped in half

Typhoon “Yangliu” made landfall on the coastal area of Zhangpu County in Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province in the early hours of August 14. Due to the impact of the typhoon, various dangerous situations have been reported across Fujian. Wind power equipment has been snapped at the waist, numerous trees have been uprooted, billboards have been blown down, and some vehicles have been struck.

According to the Fujian Provincial Meteorological Observatory, Typhoon “Yangliu,” the 11th typhoon of the year, landed on the coastal area of Zhangpu County in Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province around 00:30 on August 14. At the time of landfall, the maximum wind force near the center was 11 on the Beaufort scale (30 meters per second, equivalent to a strong tropical storm), with the minimum central pressure of 990 hPa. It is expected that “Yangliu” will move west-northwestward at a speed of 30 to 35 kilometers per hour, bringing heavy to torrential rains to Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan, Guizhou, and other areas.

Xinhua News Agency reported that in the early hours of August 14, the coastal area of Zhangpu County in Fujian was battered by strong winds and rain. Trees were swaying and some were uprooted, crushing parked cars nearby.

Videos circulating online showed the aftermath of the typhoon, with streets littered with broken tree branches, uprooted trees, and overturned street vendors’ stalls.

Local netizens shared their experiences, with one saying, “My husband said the winds between 12 and 1 last night were so strong, we feared the windows might break.” Another expressed fear of being hit by falling branches while delivering food.

Furthermore, on August 13, in Shapu Town, Fuqing City, a wind turbine equipment was toppled by strong winds. Photos shared online showed the wind turbine broken at the waist and the damaged blades. Officials from Shapu Town Government responded that they are dealing with the fallen blades caused by the typhoon.

In another incident in Putian City, strong winds blew down a metal frame, which fell on a passing vehicle. Details about injuries, if any, are unclear. The local police mentioned that due to the typhoon, many billboards were torn down, leading to numerous distress calls.

A netizen from Quanzhou mentioned that trees knocked over by the strong winds damaged cars below. “It didn’t rain, but the wind was so strong. I live on the 6th floor and it felt like our home was about to be blown away.”

Typhoon “Yangliu” is considered the strongest typhoon to make a landfall in China this year. Due to its impact, ferry services on the Xiamen-Jinmen and Quanzhou-Jinmen routes were suspended. Partial train services on the Beijing-Guangzhou and Beijing-Kowloon railways were halted, along with disruptions to the Hangzhou-Shenzhen, Ningbo-Guangzhou, and Meizhou-Swartz Bay high-speed train routes.

As of 14:00 on August 14, Typhoon “Yangliu” had entered Shaoguan City in Guangdong Province. Over the past 6 hours, Guangdong experienced heavy rainfall, with some areas accumulating over 50 millimeters. Guangzhou received 74.5 millimeters of rainfall, while Huidong recorded 147.1 millimeters. In Guangzhou, the maximum hourly rainfall reached 39.4 millimeters.

The China Meteorological Administration predicts that the rainfall will persist in Guangdong this afternoon and tomorrow, with some northern and coastal areas likely to see heavy to torrential rain.
