Typhoon Danna strikes Taiwan causing 2 deaths and 334 injuries; 2,270 incidents of disaster recorded.

Taiwan’s Central Disaster Response Center announced today that Typhoon Danna has caused a total of 2,270 disaster situations nationwide, resulting in 2 deaths and 334 injuries.

The center held its 7th working meeting this morning, chaired by Commander and Minister of the Interior, Shih-Fang Liu. According to the report from the Fire Department of the Ministry of the Interior, as of 8 a.m. today, the disaster response resources (fire manpower and equipment) deployed include: 19 helicopters on standby, 5,795 rescuers, 4,965 rescue vehicles, and 1,040 rescue boats. A total of 3,417 people have been mobilized, and there are 2,001 designated alert areas across Taiwan.

The Fire Department of the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of China reported that there have been a total of 2,270 disaster situations nationwide, with the most common being related to people’s livelihoods, infrastructure damage, and fallen trees. The areas most affected include Tainan City, Chiayi County, Chiayi City, Kaohsiung City, and Yunlin County. The disasters have led to 2 deaths and 334 injuries, with Tainan City reporting the highest number of injuries at 165, followed by 55 in Chiayi City.

The fatalities include a 60-year-old patient surnamed Chen from Tainan City, who died at 2:04 a.m. due to a power outage at home causing his respirator to fail, and a father and son surnamed Chen from Tainan City who were selling fruits from a farm vehicle and were hit by a fallen tree during the typhoon, resulting in the father, aged 69, suffering from cardiac arrest.

The Water and Power Maintenance Unit reported a total of 200 cases of flooding nationwide, with ongoing flooding in 11 locations in Taichung City, 3 in Chiayi County, 3 in Tainan City, 3 in Kaohsiung City, and 1 in Pingtung County. In total, 68,367 households experienced water outages, with 51,399 already restored and 16,968 waiting for repairs. Additionally, 495,770 households experienced power outages, with 107,351 restored and 388,419 awaiting restoration.

The Taiwan Central Weather Bureau stated at 11:30 a.m. that according to the latest data, Typhoon Danna’s center was located north of Taipei and moving towards the northwest after previously moving northeast. The main island of Taiwan has now exited the typhoon’s violent storm circle, though northern parts of Taiwan’s sea are still under threat. It is expected that the typhoon will continue to weaken with a tendency for the storm circle to shrink.

The maritime alert range for Typhoon Danna covers the northern waters of Taiwan, and vessels in operation in the area should be on high alert. Today, sea conditions near Taiwan remain rough, with a probability of long waves along the northern and northeastern coasts as well as in Matsu. Those planning seaside activities should exercise caution.
