On July 16th in the afternoon, near Liulaozhuang in Huai’an, Jiangsu Province on the Shanghai-bound section of the Beijing-Shanghai Expressway, two heavy-duty trucks collided and caught fire, one of which was a transport truck carrying new energy vehicles. Thick smoke billowed at the scene, engulfing multiple vehicles in flames.
The Jiangsu Huai’an Traffic Police Detachment reported in the early hours of July 17th that around 2 p.m. on July 16th, Liaoning BHN5*6 / Liaoning BH5*9 heavy-duty trucks (express delivery vehicles) were traveling southbound on the G2 Beijing-Shanghai Expressway near kilometer marker 793 when they rear-ended the ahead Jilin AP79*3 / Jilin AJ6*8 heavy-duty truck (a specialized transport vehicle for new energy vehicles), resulting in the combustion of both vehicles, their cargoes, and complete closure of a single lane of the road. The report mentioned no casualties, and investigations into the cause of the accident and follow-up measures were ongoing.
According to reports from mainland media, witnesses described the accident as a head-on collision and fire between a heavy-duty truck and a trailer carrying a sedan, with the new cars on the trailer catching fire one after another with explosions. Due to the vehicles blocking the road after the accident, traffic was disrupted.
According to the official Weibo account of the original content section of the Chinese automotive information platform “Car Enthusiast,” an eyewitness said, “It’s a large truck pulling a trailer that caught fire, the trailer was carrying several small cars, all burned to the ground. It was right in the middle of the road.”
As of 7:05 p.m. on July 16th, the visible flames at the scene were extinguished, and by 8:35 p.m., the first and second lanes were reopened for traffic flow.
In the afternoon of July 17th, a reporter from “Focus News” contacted the Jiangsu Highway Administration. The staff mentioned that following the incident, several drivers reported traffic congestion in the affected area, stating that “the accident took a long time to handle.” Officers from the local traffic police squadron at the scene of the incident explained that the specific details of the accident are still under investigation.
